These affect one’s ability to process, send, receive and comprehend graphic symbol systems, concepts or verbal/nonverbal systems They may range in severity from mild to profound and could be acquired or developmental. One may demonstrate one or any combination and may result in a primary disability or it may be secondary to other disabilities.
They include:
Speech disorders
- Articulation Disorder: This is when someone has trouble making certain speech sounds correctly.
- Fluency Disorder: This is when there are interruptions in the flow, rhythm, rate of speech, like stuttering and cluttering.
- Voice Disorder: This involves problems with the way the voice sounds, like being too high or too soft, hoarse voice, strained voice and breathy voice.
Language Disorder
This is when someone has trouble understanding or using spoken or written language. It can affect the sounds, structure of words, sentence formation, word meanings, and how language is used in communication.
Hearing Disorders
- Deafness: A total or significant loss of hearing.
- Hard of Hearing: Some difficulty hearing, but still relies on the auditory channel for communication.
Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD)
This is when there's a problem in how the brain processes what is heard. It can affect things like understanding, remembering, and using auditory information. This is not related to problems in the ears or intelligence.
